Research into Long Term Memory
(BRLTM2K13)
(Southwell, Frazer and Rose)
Aims:
The aim of the researchers experiment was to test the long term memories of teachers at two different education sites. The two sites differed in the fact that one was a high school and the other was a sixth form centre. This difference was a factor that was being tested as in a high school set up, the teachers are in the environment with the pupils for a five year period, where in a sixth form set up, the teachers are only with the pupils for a maximum of three years, but on average only two years. The main factor that was being measured was the difference in remembering pupils that had left the particular education centre two years ago, and pupils that had left seven years ago.
Hypotheses:
Directional – significantly more pupils will be remembered by the teachers in the high school centre, than teachers from the sixth form centre. In particular, significantly more students that left the high school in 2010-11, than any other class that the researchers used.
Null – there will be no significant difference in the numbers of pupils remembered across the four class bands that were used.
Independent variable – the number of pupils that teachers could remember from each year, in the respected education centre, with the aid of a leaving picture.
Dependent Variable – The leaving picture that was shown to the teachers in the particular education centre. It was either a leaving picture from 2006-07 or from 2010-11.
Method:
The researchers used opportunistic sampling to gather the participants that were needed for the experiment. The participants used were eighteen teachers from the two separate education centres. However, there was one criterion that was needed form each participant. The teachers that they chose to take part had to have been working at the respected education centre for a minimum of eight years. This criterion was needed so that they could have been in contact with all of the pupils that were at the centres across the time period; 2006-present. The participants used were all full time teachers. They were either teaching at Downham Market Sixth Form Centre, or they were teaching at Terrington St. Clements High School. All of the participants had been teaching at their respected education centres for a minimum of eight years. The researchers used nine teachers from each school environment.
The researchers used leaving photos from the two education centres. In total there were four photos used; leavers from the high school from 2006-07 and 2010-11, and leavers from the sixth form, from the same years. In gathering these photos, the researchers had to gain permission from the education centres and had to search through leavers books from the sixth form in particular.
The researchers used a repeated measures design in their experiment, as they were first shown the leavers photo from 2006-07 and then were shown the photo from 2010-11. however, the repeated measures design was carried out as a field experiment, as the test took place in the teachers respected classrooms, so was a field experiment.
The researchers made the method a standardised procedure. This was achieved as all the teachers were given the same experience during the test, apart from of course, the environment in which they took the test; however, the environments were all in their own classrooms. So each teacher had the same, but personalised experience. All teachers were given the same amount of time to remember the number of students that they could. The conditions were kept the same, as there was no communication between the researchers and participants, and the surrounding environment for each test was kept silent. All participants were both briefed before the experiment and were debriefed after the experiment, using the same script.
a lack of rehearsal or displacement where memories are pushed out before entering LTM to make room for new information. After being rehearsed the information from STM will then be passed into LTM were it has unlimited capacity and a duration of a lifetime. In the case of being forgotten, it is usually by interference where LTM Is confused with memory. An experiment that distinguishes STM from LTM is research composed by Glazer and Cunitz, with their primacy and recency effect. After asking…
Cognitive Psychology Cognitive psychologists use four main Research Methods: 1. Laboratory Experiments: Lots of research in cognitive psychology happen in laboratories. Very scientific and reliable as you can have greater control over variables in lab. But this type of research doesn’t tell us much about the real world – had low ecological validity. 2. Field Experiments: Take place in natural situation (e.g. studies of memory or attention in a school environment), have more ecological validity, but…
Outline and evaluate research into the working memory model The working memory model was a model comprised by Baddeley and Hitch. This model was designed to show memory which is in use, while tasks are being performed. The model composes of four devices which lead to memory being stored into the long term memory. Firstly there is the central executive. The central executive monitors and co-ordinates all other mental functions within the working memory. The model also comprises of the episodic buffer…
rehearsal) encoding: acoustic Information is passed on to the LTM by elaborative rehearsal. Long-term memory(LTM): capacity: unlimited duration: up to a lifetime encoding: semantic Evaluate the Multi-Store Model of memory Glanzer and Cunitz (1956) found that the first few words of a list (primacy effect) and the last few words (recency effect) are better recalled than the words in the middle of the list. The first few words are in the LTM and the last few words are in the STM at the time of recall…
semantic memory is a storage system of facts, meanings of words and general knowledge of the world such as the capital of cities (Tulving, 1972). Research on memory is arduous and the problems questioned are not easily solved (Tulving, 1985). At the beginning, the answer to the title question would be ‘three’ but when looking into further research based on studies of amnesiacs, the number increased to about approximately ‘seven’. However, being aware of the difficult nature of memory and the limitations…
assumption there are three kinds of memory: Sensory memory Short term memory (STM) Long term memory (LTM) Sensory Memory Storage for unprocessed information for fractions of a second after a physical stimulus is no longer available. It’s assumed we have separate sensory stores for all the different senses but it’s the visual sensory store (iconic memory) which has attracted the most research. Short term memory Holds information for brief periods of time. ( Baddely and Hitch renamed it the…
computer. When processing this you need encode, save, retrieve it into the computer. Researchers think he human brain is like a computer . Using our 5 senses, were selective to what we pay attention too. This also helps us to survive. Most research has been done with hearing and vision. Sensory register- selective attention= paying attention to something Then it lowers down to short term memory- STM- working memory Then it processes to Long Term Memory- then goes back to STM- which helps…
contained the hippocampus, and some of the cortices underlying it, as well as part of the amygdala. The doctor, John Harlow concluded that the specific types of memory located to the specific structures in the brain that were removed. This method of research, the case study, was ethical because they kept his identity from the media and referred to him as HM. One of the worst recorded cases of amnesia was that of Clive Wearing. He was a pianist and a conductor, and he developed 'herpes encephalitis'…
PSYA4: Psychopathology, Psychology in Action and Research Methods SECTION A: PSYCHOPATHOLOGY Question 01 AO1 = 9 marks Description of issues surrounding the classification and diagnosis of schizophrenia. There are many issues surrounding the classification and diagnosis of mental disorders in general, most of which are related in some way to the idea of reliability and validity. It is acceptable to describe overarching issues as long as they have relevance to schizophrenia. However, there…
