Rape In today’s society the highest level of sexual assault known as “rape” is happening more frequently. It is a crime of forcing another person to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse. The word “rape” comes from the Latin word “rapere,” which means seize or take away by force. Rape is an undesired and forced sexual act, common amongst women, who should not be taken lightly. Women that have experience rape in their life time are affected by both physical and mental trauma. First, women are affected by physical trauma of rape. This type of trauma can last for days, weeks, or even months. The nineteen thousand women who are raped every day in the US, and who are suffering from physical trauma, are likely to experience soreness and pain from injuries mainly in the areas that were targeted by the rapist. Injuries from the beating or the choking of a victim can cause bruises, scratches, cuts, and broken bones. Sexually transmitted diseases such as herpes, gonorrhoea, AIDS, and syphilis can be contracted. Possible pregnancy can even happen amongst these women who are victims of rape. The women can even physically begin to hurt themselves by taking drugs, splitting their wrists, or by doing anything to take their minds away from pain that they are experiencing every day. Second and most important women are affected is the mentally due to rape. Mental trauma can last for years, and many things in the victims’ lives can be affected by this trauma. Women may feel an increased distrust toward others in general and an increased suspicion of men in particular. They may have a shorter temper, and can easily break into tears. In addition, depression, guilt, a general loss of self-esteem, and a lack of sleep can reflect the anger they are feeling inwardly or the unresolved fears they are feeling toward the rapist or assailant.
