Key Topics
Measures of Central Tendency
Stem & Leaf Plot and describing distributions
Using Excel to graph data
Answer as completely as you can and show your work.

1. Each year the Academy of the Screen Actors Guild gives an award for the best actor and actress in a motion picture. We have recorded the name and age of each since 1996. The data for males and females is given below (the sample size, n =17). The sum of their age is also given.

a. By hand, in the table below, construct a Stem and Leaf plot for each group to compare the distributions. You should use the same scale on both graphs to make a better comparison.

b. Calculate the measures of central tendency for each group. You will need to use the full data from above (use all decimal places to calculate these measures. Use two decimal places for your answers. You can use Excel to help you do this.

c. Briefly compare the two distributions using the Stem and Leaf Plots and the measures of central tendency.
The male distributions are mostly in the 40s. This is supported by the mean of 45.18. The female distributions are mostly in the 30s as supported by the mean of 35.18. The shape of the male’s data is mound shaped while the female data has no classified shape. Females show a bi-modal characteristic in the 20s and 30s.

2. Do problem 3 in Chapter 1 of the book. This is an Excel exercise where you chart the rank of your name to as far back as the data allow. If your name is unique and does not fall in the top 1,000, pick another name in your family. To help you, I have included the Excel file, Rank of Names.xls If you need help. e-mail me.
