I chose Purposeful Aging: Teleological Perspectives on the Development of Social Interest in Late Adulthood by Jeffery M. Penick – The journal of Individual Psychology. In the article Penick discusses the evolution of social development in older adults. He discusses the increase in the need to search for spirituality and community as people begin to realize their own mortality and start accept their fate. The social development of people between the ages of 65-85 are different from any other age group as these individuals have developed a strong sense of identity throughout their lives; their choices, actions, and relationships are based on this strong self-perception while their willingness to accept new environments and acquaintances fills the their need from communal bonds. I chose this article because most of the research of social development seems to be focused on the growing minds of children and young adults as this is when the majority of changes and stages take place throughout a person’s life. The study of the elderly itself is a relatively new area in psychology. “For instance, it is estimated that of all the human beings who have ever lived to be 65 years or older, half are currently alive (Rowe & Kahn,'1998).”- Jeffery M. Penick, The journal of Individual Psychology (2004). The social development of seniors is an interesting area of study as it has not, until recently, been studied robustly. It is intriguing because this stage lies ahead of most of us; as
