Call Me Pro Choice
The issue of abortion is one of the most controversial topics in the United States. A women’s choice to have an abortion should be there’s and should remain a legal option for women to have because a women’s right to choose abortion is a fundamental right recognized in the 1973 U.S Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade. Abortion is defined as a "termination of pregnancy that results in the removal of the fetus” (Abortion). Abortion is a healthy and legal way that can aid women that are not ready to have a child at that given time.
Abortion should remain a legal choice for women. If abortion was made illegal women would be forced to turn to illegal or “back yard” abortions. Having women to be forced to turn to illegal measures in backyard abortions can cause a danger to many women. The number of deaths caused by illegal abortions is 8 times greater than death rate from legal abortions. Furthermore, every 8 minutes a woman dies needlessly as a result of an unsafe illegal abortion (Dudley). Proven, abortions should stay legal to protect women and their decisions to keep or terminated a pregnancy.
One of the main reasons that I feel the way that I do is because of my aunt. When my aunt was a teenage back in the 1960’s abortion was illegal. My aunt was too young and was not mature enough to have a child and was not financially stable. She felt her only option was to get rid of the child. My aunt went to an illegal abortionist and had a back yard abortion performed on her. Her going to this back yard abortion was not safe, the person was not trained to do that type of procedure because abortions were illegal and it resulted in my aunt not being able to have kids later on in life.
Regardless of abortions being legal or illegal people will find ways to get them. Wealthier families could probably find ways for themselves to go to other countries performed and the struggling low and middle income families will not have that opportunity. They will have to turn to these unsafe “back yard” abortions. As long as abortions are legal it gives citizens the ability to have the procedures done accurately and safely protecting the health of these women.
Allowing the termination of pregnancies to be made illegal can hurt not only the mother, but the child as well. A child being born to an unfit mother can cause the child problems in early and later life. Children of adolescents are more likely to be born prematurely and 50% more likely to be low-birth weight babies. Children of adolescent mothers grow up with more health problems than children of mothers who are twenty and above. For instance, 38% of children born to adolescent mothers had “excellent” health, as compared to 60% for children born to mothers over twenty(Dexter). Forcing a mother that is not ready or fit to raise a child can have serious effects on the mother. Many reason women choose to terminate their pregnancies is because they are not financially secure, they are too young and insecure or they would be forced to raise the child alone as a single mother. Moreover, having a child when you’re not ready could interfere with school work or careers and a mother should not be forced to have a child and risk not completing their careers or schooling.
Abortion should remain legal because there are many circumstances of why people get pregnant. There are numerous cases of women who get rapped and become pregnant. 14,000 women have abortions following rape or incest (Dexter). This shows that there are numerous rape incidents and by forcing that many women to keep those unwanted pregnancies. This could cause women to resent their children and put the child in an abusive home situation.
I found an article on www.prochoice.org. The title of the article that I have chosen is “history of Abortion” and the author of the article is the National Abortion Federation. The author’s main point was to explain the history of abortion and the effects that it had. The author
controversy stating if you are pro-choice or pro-life? This means that a persons right to life is more essential than other rights. It is the women's right to be Pro-Choice bringing a fetus to full term or to Pro-Life, the right of the fetus being born. Each of these movements have a way to influence Americas opinion now. There are two main groups that people's opinions are divided into, these are the Pro-Choice and Pro-Life arguments. Pro-Choice allows the women to have a choice whether to have an abortion…
Pro-Choice Vs. Pro-Life Baker College of Flint February 2, 2012 English 102, 12:00, Mrs. Hall Pro-Choice Vs. Pro-Life Expulsion of a fetus before it is able to survive, this is the argument between pro-choice vs. pro-life, an argument that goes as far back as 1000b.c. The majority of abortions happen during the first trimester prior to the 13th week of gestation. I believe in pro-choice, although I believe there should also be a time period in which it should be…
Abortion: Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice Abortion: Pro-Life Vs. Pro-Choice “Abortion is the spontaneous or artificially induced expulsion of an embryo or fetus” (Abortion, 2002). An artificially induced abortion is the type referred to in the legal context. Abortions happen in different situations. The question comes when is it the right or wrong choice. The root question becomes the moment a fetus becomes a person and entitled to rights. The fetus could be a person at conception, during…
As expected, there are many people that are opposed to abortion. These people are better referred to as "pro-life advocates", or essentially, they advocate the life of the baby over the woman's right to choose if the baby lives or dies. Groups such as Human Life International, The Christian Coalition, and many other support the right of human life. There are several reasons why people who are pro-life do not support abortion. A main argument is that one is killing an unborn baby, murdering an unsuspecting…
writing about abortion is to explain my opinion as well as clear some confusion about this subject and show that there is more to it then the two arguments that people come up with . while reading articles to back up my opinion I found out that the pro choice view is that a baby does not have human rights while in the mothers womb . while I do not quite agree with that statement I still agree that it should be legal my reasoning is that even if abortion was illegal in a majority of the states the government…
beliefs regarding numerous religious and scientific ideas of life and rights. Over time two distinguished groups have formed with opposing views on the issue of abortion. One being pro-life supporters where they believe that abortion is murder and don’t think people should get abortions and the second being pro-choice who are people who believe abortion is okay. A major disagreement that will be further discussed is the point at which the fetus becomes a person. The controversial issues concerning…
is under fierce debate. There are two major sides to the abortion debate; Pro-Life, and Pro-Choice. Pro-Life advocates are often called Anti-Choice, or Pro-Coercion advocates by the Pro-Choice side, and Pro-Choice advocates are often called anti-Life or Pro-Murder advocates by the Pro-Life movement. Pro-Life debaters believe that abortion is murder, and that it should be illegal, whereas the Pro-Choice side of the debate believes that it is no one’s business what a woman does with her body…
decides to do one they should really think about it. It is always up to the person, but I believe abortion is not illegal and I am “pro-choice”. E. Finally, I will discuss why I am “pro-choice”, and why I believe abortion is okay in my eyes. II. Body A. First, I will discuss what abortion really is and some facts about…
first point I would like to talk about is when is the fetus considered to be a human life? Pro-life thinks that life begins at conception, so abortion is akin to murder as it is to the act of taking a human life. Now the Pro-choice argues that most abortions take place in the first trimester of pregnancy when a fetus cannot exist independently. Both of the side is very strong points but I think Pro-choice has the stronger point. I think the law doesn’t allow…
