1. “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in wants of a wife” Chapter 1 | During the time period that this book takes place, this quote could be proven true. At this time, there were arranged marriages based on a mans place in society and his fortune. Today, people get married because they are in love. Some people may marry others based on their financial standings but there are many wealthy people, my aunt for example, who have no desire to rush into marriage. | 2. A young man, Mr. Bingley, has arrived in town. He is wealthy and successful. Parents dream of their daughters finding a husband like him.
Darcy's proposal, she rejects and accuses him of sabotaging Jane and Bingley's relationship. | 13. A theme throughout the book is love. | Many of the characters are falling in and out of love. Mr. Darcy falls in love with Elizabeth, Jane and Mr. Bingley fall in love, and even Charlotte and Mr. Collins fall in love although it was a sudden marriage. Even though Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley are in a higher social class than Elizabeth and Jane, real love can overcome any social standings, and that is proved in this book. | 14. Elizabeth receives two letters from Jane. One tells her that Lydia has eloped with Wickham, and another that says there is no word from neither Lydia or Wickham and there is a possibility that they are not married yet. Elizabeth is very frightened by this because her families reputation is at risk. Chapter 35 | This shows us as the reader that Elizabeth cares deeply about her family. She blamed herself for Lydia running off and being missing due to the fact that she had not exposed Wickham for the man he truly is. | 15. Lydia and Wickham are found and Wickham has agreed to marry Lydia as long as he is guaranteed a small income. Chapter 49 | Wickham first came off as a polite young man who was taken advantage of and could do no wrong, but this shows us that Wickham only cares about himself and his money. | 16.
