SPECIFIC LESSON “If I was President”, Characteristics of a good President CURRICULUM AREA Literacy
Central Focus: Students will be making inferences from the text to further their understandings about the characteristics of a good leader/president.
Learning Objective: By the end of this lesson, the students should be able to comprehend a reading passage (story) as well as make inferences and write about these inferences.
NYS Common Core Learning Standard(s):
*RL.1.7: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas- Use Illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, settings or events. The students will do this by evaluating the content of the story, ________, and use this information to describe good characteristics in a leader. *RI.1.4: Craft and Structure- Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text. The students will do this by reflecting on the story and asking questions to clarify their morning. *W.1.2: Text Types and Purposes- Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. The students will accomplish this by writing a narrative on characteristics of a good president. *SL.1.1: Comprehension and Collaboration- Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. The students will achieve this by having a collaborative conversation about the story on the carpet with the teacher along with the rest of the class.
Rationale: This lesson is being taught for the understanding of good qualities and characteristics of a person to make a good leader/president.

Development/Procedures:

Introduction/Motivation: The lesson will start off by talking about characteristics. The teacher will show the definition of characteristics on the board and tell the students some of her characteristics, as well as asking them what characteristics she has. Then, the teacher will segway into the topic of Presidents day. From here, the students will explain what they think a president’s job is and what makes a good president/leader versus a bad president/leader. After this intro, the story, ______________, will be introduced.

Instructional Strategies:
*First, the teacher will invite the students to the reading carper, one by one depending on who is the best behaved and sitting correctly.
*The teacher will wait until everyone is quiet and then introduce the topic of characteristics. The teacher will have the definition of characteristics already written on a jumbo note paper that will be shown to the students to start the topic. This topic will be discussed as a class. The teacher will then ask the students what they know about Presidents day and about presidents in general. The teacher will also ask the students what they think a president’s job is as well as what they think makes a good president (characteristics).
