For many people risk is an accepted part of everyday life. Every day activities such as catching the bus, travelling on holiday, playing football, setting up home and starting a family all carry some element of risk.
Risk plays a part in our health, safety, security, well-being, employment, education, daily activities, using resources and equipment and in community participation. But some adults, for example disabled people or older people, are often discouraged from taking risks.
Traditionally they are not encouraged to take risks in areas such as budgeting, planning, employment and daily living skills. This may be either because of their perceived limitations or fear that they or others might be harmed.

* Rectal
Medicines administered via this route are very quickly absorbed. These are known as suppositories and can only be administered by a trained care worker.

* Vaginal
These medicines are pessaries or creams with special applicators. This way of administration is usually for virginal conditions. Trained care workers can provide this form of administration.

* Topical application
This is where creams, ointments and gels are applied directly to the skin. Care workers are often required to apply this but gloves should always be worn.

* Transdermal patch
This is a patch of which the drug is released slowly over time into the bloodstream. The area should be clean dry and hair free.

The pharmacist may dispense medicine in bottles and boxes and sometimes in a monitored dosage system. There are a variety of different systems on the market and it is down to the staff and or person receiving domiciliary care to which is best for them. An MDS is normally used for tablets or capsules. Inhalers, eye drops, creams, ointments and effervescent tablets cannot be dispensed via this method.
