Plants use a number of absorption techniques to get the nutrients and moisture necessary for sturdy growth. As roots dive deep into the soil, they encounter air, water and nutrient reserves. In contrast, photosynthesising leaves discover sunlight and air as they rise up to the sky.

Light intensity is varied by moving a lamp away from pondweed.

Set up the apparatus and leave for few minutes for the pondweed to adapt to the new light intensity
Count the number of bubbles given off in one minute.
Move the light, 10 centimetres away from the pondweed.
Leave for five minutes; for the pondweed to tailor the new light intensity again.
