Modes Discussions
Spencer/Galvan ─ AP11, 20142015 With a partner or on your own, you are responsible for presenting an analysis and leading a discussion of an essay. Teaching
● Prepare for your discussion without looking for “insight” online ─ DO IT YOURSELF! You’ll get more out of it by doing it on your own.
● 2025 minutes from beginning to end.
● Your “lesson” needs to utilize passage analysis strategies we have discussed (SOAPStone, DIDLS, annotation)
● Cover all aspects of the analysis during the discussion, focusing on only relevant clues from your essay.
● Be sure to save time for the discussion of the “so what” and ultimate discovery of an argument presented in the essay. ● Prepare for the discussion by creating a list of 8 – 10 evaluative questions that will illicit insight and wonderment. ● Your grade is based on the depth of discussion you illicit and nurture and insight garnered during the discussion, not on a “right” answer (see
Presentation Rubric
). Only knowledge gained in the reading of the passage will be assessed. Any outside information will not be counted towards the evaluation of the essay.
● On your presentation day, dress professionally . Essay Requirement for Presenter
● You are responsible on the day of your presentation, for turning in a fully developed essay to the following prompt related directly to your essay. The essay needs to be turned in to turnitin.com electronically that morning. The essay will be graded using the AP Timed Writing Rubric.
● In addition, a fully annotated copy of your essay selection needs to be turned in on the day of your presentation with an outline of your questions for the discussion.
● We do not want a full introductory paragraph. We want the essay to start with just the thesis. Think of this essay as the equivalent of the best timed write on an essay you've ever written. What is the author’s purpose and how is it achieved? Audience
● Prepare for each discussion by completing a Reader Response, and do not look online for an “insight.”
● Bring your book of the essay with the annotations and post its to add to the notes you have already made
(Galvan). Bring an annotated copy in Drive/or a hard copy of the essay annotated (Spencer).
● Be sure your questions on your RR are thought provoking.
● The RRs will be checked periodically without warning.
