Review of performance literature

Our chosen sport was Basketball, before we started our analysis we reviewed the current performance analysis literature on basketball.
The research we found was not all related specifically to turnovers which is what our analysis would be on, by looking at the research we found that.

That by having performance analysis of a team a coach will be able to have much more significant information and will then be able to make decisions more objectively. Ibanez, et al. (2009) supports this by stating that in order for the coaches to have reliable information about their team and teams opponents, performance analysis is key.
Further to this there have bee many published papers concerning specific areas that make the difference between winning and losing basketball teams, for example Silva and Andrews (1987) looked into field goals percentages, rebounds and turnovers. Sampaio, Drinkwater & Leite, 2010) explain that there are many performance indicators that play a major part in a teams success.
Rationale for choice of method analysis

For the performance analysis of the university woman’s basketball team we used notational analysis, and video analysis where the focus was on the analysis of the match rather than time motion.

The captain of the woman’s basketball team asked us to look at the performance indicator of turnovers, and the resulting outcome of said turnover i.e. whether any points were scored. Hughes and Bartlett (2002) stated that performance indicators are used to assess the performance of an individual, a team or elements of a team. Looking at further research with regards to turnovers , Pribe (1997) found that by a team having 2 to 4 fewer turnovers than there opposition it will lead to an increase of 60% with regards to the teams chance of winning. A further reason for studying this performance indicator is Gomez, MA, Lorenzo, A. et al (2007) who said that by knowing the crucial performance indicators the coaches can have more specific practice and can manage their game plans to ensure success within these areas, and also tactically, by creating strategies to maximize opponents chance of performing poorly when marked against these indicators.
When selecting the turnover types consideration was given to Fylaktakidou et al 2009 who conducted a study of turnovers in the women’s game of basketball, they collected data around the types of turnover, similar to the methods that were decided upon.
When arranging data collection methods and zonal court areas the court was divided into 6 areas allowing sequential data analysis to be used. This is similar to Hughes and Franks (2008) zonal model however their’s is far more complex allowing a more accurate collection of data. Along side this analysis there were cameras set up allowing video to be captured, which will increase the amount of data that can be collected and therefore analysed enhancing the value of the data to the analyst coaches and the athletes Izzo R (2010)

With reference to figure 1 the highest type of turnover was missed shots contributing a total percentage of 48 this was followed by 24% missed passes. Looking at the players, number 6 Hannah had a total of 16 turnovers which is 29% of the total turnovers, the next highest percentage was Number 8 Jamie with 24. Of the 54 turnovers Brighton conceded, Exeter scored 42 points. This suggests that in line with research, had Brighton made fewer turnovers they could have won the game (Teck et al, 2012). Looking at fig 2, the Brighton v Oxford game, again the turnover type occurring the most was 33 which were missed shots, followed by missed passes with 14 out of the 65 totaled.
