The Quilting Frolic (1813)
John Krimmel was one of the most famous painters of genre scenes in American history. Krimmel was a German who emigrated to the United States of America in 1809 and soon joined the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Among Krimmel’s well known paintings, there was one called “The Quilting Frolic” which was a particular and unique piece of art. This painting not only reflected how social status was arranged during that time but also reflected a strong hierarchy organization, having whites as the superior image and “blacks” as the inferior one. In this painting, guests are accompanied by a “black fiddler” celebrating the finishing of a quilt. This image has been identified by being very particular due to the physiognomical distortions that it reflects, such as “wide toothy grins and oversized lips”. In this painting the artist shows the differences between “black servants” and their superiors. It reflects their appearance differences such as the way they used to dress up, and it also shows the tasks that they used to perform as well. The little black girl of this picture is the one making sure people is satisfied with tea and the other black servant is the one playing the violin. The way black servants were treated depended on the families who used to own them, sometimes they were nice people, and sometimes not in which

views, the definition of ‘art’ is the ‘application of human creative skill, in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.’ The notion of ‘anti-art’ emerges after Impressionism of the 1890’s, when artists such as Claude Monet, questioned the definition of art and challenged it, creating new approaches to painting landscapes. Primitivism, as pursued by Paul Gauguin, and then Cubism, originating from Picasso’s primitivist…
Manet’s Olympia careful attention to detail and deliberate symbolism leave nothing to the viewer’s imagination. Both paintings depict a prostitute in her place of work, yet despite the similar subject matter the effect of each painting is quite different. In Manet’s painting, the details that indicate that the subject is a prostitute include her pearl earrings and bracelet, the black ribbon around her neck, her cast off slipper, the orchid in her hair, and even the name Olympia. These features not…
works of painting, literature, history, architecture and music in Western civilization over a specific period in time. Romanticism is a rejection of the precepts of order, harmony, calm, idealization, balance and rationality that characterized Classicism in the general and late 18th century, Neoclassicism in particular (Encyclopædia Britannica). Originally, Romantic meant the opposite of classical. Classical is orderly and calm, even serene. On the other hand, Romantic is wild, paintings and poems…
Art is everywhere; from architecture to sculptures, paintings, pictures and even flower gardens. There are many styles and techniques used by artists to capture the eye of a viewer and draw them into the artwork. One such art piece that has this effect is: Mérode Altarpiece (Triptych of the Annunciation) by Robert Campin (Master of Flémalle), circa 1425-1430s. This beautiful triptych was painted in oil on oak panels, with the center panel measuring 25 1/4 x 24 7/8” and each side panel measuring…

life has been the subject of historical conjecture. Vasari, the 16th-century biographer of Renaissance painters, tells of how a local peasant made himself a round shield and requested that Ser Piero have it painted for him. Leonardo responded with a painting of a monster spitting fire which was so terrifying that Ser Piero sold it to a Florentine art dealer, who sold it to the Duke of Milan. Meanwhile, having made a profit, Ser Piero bought a shield decorated with a heart pierced by an arrow, which he…
them keep warm at night. For the hot summer days they opened up the windows and doors, creating ventilation since there weren’t any appliances to help them with the temperature in the house. Upstairs was the Master bed room, the guestroom and the servants rooms. The Master bed room was for Rufus and his wife, who later weren’t able to share rooms because of Mrs. Kings digestive system disease, causing her death in 1878. The Guest room was for company that stayed over, like John Quincy Adams, who…
Davinier exemplifies the revolutionary abolitionist thoughts of how blacks and white were equal. He represents the idealism that was present in even the founding fathers who believed all men were equal. This distinctive difference may be linked to the different in time period of production as different painting techniques were used at different times. At the end of the early Classical period, when the Calyx-Krater was completed, red-figure vessels were very popular7 Figures are outlined in black glaze, with details painted in, and then the whole background is also painted with black glaze In the white-ground…
