“Out-of-the-Box” Sales Promotions
An out of the box sales promotion is pretty self-explanatory. Out of the box sales promotions are not your average bobble head or t-shirt giveaway for the first few hundred or few thousand fans to arrive to the game or event, it is still a basic giveaway but transformed into a more creative idea to attract more fans attending the game or event where the giveaway takes place and even more attention.
The Taco Bell 5-Run promotion for the Arizona Diamondbacks is when they score five runs or more at home or away, fans can get three free crunchy tacos with the purchase of a large drink from 4-6 p.m. the next day at all participating Taco Bell locations in Arizona. This is a creative way to get fans to be even more excited and attentive to the game. Taco Bell is very big for a lot of people and many people enjoy their food that they sell so many people will root on the D-backs in hopes of getting a few free tacos.
For the Tacoma Rainiers there is a Pink at the Park night “…devoted to raising money to fund mammogram screenings for medically underserved women in the South Sound” (Rainiers). At this event there is a live auction on the baseball field after the game to win jerseys worn in the game. All the auction proceeds go to the Carol Milgard Breast Center. This is out of the box because not only are they encouraging people to wear pink and support a local Breast Center.
The Seattle Mariners have a Star Wars Night at Safeco Field where fans are encouraged to dress in their Star Wars costumes for a costume contest, and characters from the movie will be in costume at the game. After the game, they will be lighting up the sky above Safeco Field with a Star Wars themed fireworks show.
The Seattle Mariners also have a “Salute to Kids Day”. For the kids 14 and under, they get a Mariners backpack, sponsored by Boeing. Also kids 6 to 14 can sign up to work their “dream jobs” at Safeco field, including but not limited to the reporter, groundskeeper, or public address announcer, to be a part of this “dream job” experience all you have to do is go the Mariners official team store, or send a
