Organizational Behavior project
After interviewing the four people, I noticed a lot of things. The first one being that everyone would still continue to work even if they didn’t have to. I thought this was kind of shocking because I thought that people didn’t really enjoy working and would rather do other things. When interviewing all of the people, they all said something about working taking up time and that they would get bored if they didn’t have to work. Another similarity with this question is how people responded to what they would do if they weren’t working. For the most part, people talked about traveling and spending more time with family and friends. This was what I expected to be the reason why people didn’t want to work if they didn’t have to. It turns out I guess that people don’t want to spend so much time with their friends and family that they want to quit their jobs. Another thing that I noticed was when it comes to frustrations, communication has a lot to do with people’s frustration. My dad talked about how his bosses don’t communicate with him that well and he doesn’t know exactly when to have things done; my mom also kind of talked about this. She talked about how things just get dumped on her and she doesn’t always know what to do. When things go wrong, my mom is always the one to get the blame when she didn’t really know what to do in the first place. I always realized that communication was a problem but I didn’t think it would be the main cause for everyone’s frustration. Everyone’s problems that they had, had something to do with a lack of communications and orders not getting passed down well enough. When it comes to people’s likes, they liked having variety of work. My mom and dad both talked about how they liked that they had such a wide variety of work. That if they had the same stuff all the time, the job wouldn’t be as enjoyable. This made me realize how important it is to keep people busy and keep them doing different types of work. When it came to dislikes, people had a wider variety. I think this was because all of their jobs being different and every job has its downfalls. People work to support their family but work doesn’t always stay at work. When talking to my parents and sister, they all talked about how work limited them when it comes to their family. For my sister, she has a child and doesn’t get to see him as much because she has to work two jobs to help support him. For my dad, he talked about being away from family all the time because of his traveling job. This all frustrated them because they wanted to be with their family more. I think if companies could bring family and work together, it would make for a lot happier employees. When it came to my friend Luke, he just wanted to spend more time with friends and didn’t really care about the family aspect when dealing with work but I think this is because he is younger. When it comes to motivating people I thought about the interview with Luke. He talked about how he felt very bored all the time and that he had to find his own work. I know for a fact that he is not being very productive because he is trying to find is own work and is bored all the time. Job enrichment starts with task identity and Luke clearly doesn’t know what his task is half of the time. This makes Luke feel like his task is not very significant. A study found that companies that worked consistently on engaging their employees had a increase in profit while those who didn’t had a decrease. I think the company that Luke works for is definitely seeing a decline in work by their employees with task identity being very low or nonexistent. I think for all the other people, they are more engaged in their work which makes them more profitable for their company. My mom for instance is always doing something and is always getting different type of work. That lets her have a large skill variety. Although my mom’s feedback is not
