Night Essay
Imagine not knowing when the next time you would eat again or when you would see daylight. During the Holocaust many Jews experienced this. They were robbed of their happiness and lives, but could not be robbed of their hope. Eliezer Wiesel loses his faith in God, family and humanity through the experiences he has from the Nazi concentration camp. “Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust”. Hope is essential to the survival of anyone because you have to believe that no matter what happens or what has already happened that you will get through it. Hope just might be the very thing that has you survive. Hope is essential to Eliezer’s survival because he lost all faith in God. “I did not deny God’s existence, but I doubted is absolute justice”. (Pg. 45) These conditions gave him confidence and courage to live. This showed that no matter what was happening his hope is what helped him live. Wiesel and family first arrive at Auschwitz. After he was separated from the women, Wiesel saw firsthand how many people were being tortured or killed. "For the first time, I felt revolt rise up in me. Why should I bless His name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the All-Powerful and Terrible, was silent. What had I to thank Him for" (31)?
