Bigger’s Violence Normally in a story the protagonist is kind and calm, but Richard Wright’s Native Son introduces the protagonist as being brutal and gruesome. Bigger was shown to be an early riser because when he wakes up his entire family is still asleep. Bigger is shown to be gruesome in many instances, “he had killed Mary, had smothered her, had cut her head off and put her body in the fiery furnace.” (Wright) Afterwards Wright shows how Bigger is worried he is going to get caught instead of having remorse that he just killed a woman. Bigger must have had something against the woman because of all the gruesome things he did to her. The passage takes place in the U.S during the Red Scare on a Sunday morning. The voice that Wright uses when Bigger is nervous, “beads of sweat broke out onto his forehead and his breath stopped” (Wright) makes the readers feel the amount of tension. Bigger overall seems to be stupid as well because he forgot “Mary’s shiny black purse” right after he killed her. He seems to be oblivious because he forgot to get rid of the knife and decided to sleep. Wright describes Bigger as cunning because Bigger uses his wits to get out of the situation he is in, Wright does not describe him to be intelligent because cunning is darker to use and describes Bigger well.
