Child Maltreatment Child maltreatment is a widespread issue that affects thousands of children every year.
Statics show 1,560 children died in the United States in 2010 from abuse and neglect 695,000 children were found to be victims of maltreatment by child protective services in 2010. There are four common types of child maltreatment; sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. All of these types of abuse are very serious and can have many consequences for children and families (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2011).
Child maltreatment is becoming a prevalent problem that has numerous consequences for both the child and family. The Center of Disease Control and prevention defines child abuse as any act or series of events that results in harm, potential harm or threatens the child’s safety. While many people believe that child maltreatment is simply physical many other forms of maltreatment occur; sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment are also common forms of abuse (Center of Disease Control, 2012).
There are factors that can increase the risk for abuse or neglect. However these factors do not always mean that maltreatment will occur. Community violence and little involvement between neighbors are related to a higher risk for child abuse and neglect (Administration for Children & Families, 2010). According to the Center of Disease Control a four step approach must be implemented before maltreatment can be prevented. Step 1: Define the problem by gathering and studying data. This information is very informative because it helps to know where prevention is most needed. Step 2: Identify risk and protective factors. Gather data that shows why a particular group is being targeted and why. Next create a plan to eliminate risk
