1) During the year of 1968, North Korea had seized control of the U.S.S. Pueblo, the Viet Cong had launched the Tet Offensive against nearly every large city in South Vietnam, and Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated along with Senator Robert Kennedy. All while these events had been going on, America was knee deep in the Vietnam War and Americans were protesting the war nationwide.
2) American soldiers landed in proximity to the village of My Lai. The villagers fled to their bunkers in hope of safety. When the Americans approached they were expecting to fight the Viet Cong. They unleashed a barrage of missile and machine gun fire into the village. As GIs approached the village, all civilians were treated and VC which meant immediate engagement. Men, women, children, and livestock were shot on site. The American soldiers, lead by Lt. William Calley, were raping and pillaging all in sight. There were soldiers that protested to the actions of the soldiers, and attempted to save civilians and disobey orders, but devastation was swift. The official number of fatalities is published at 504 people.
