History and major events.
Williams Companies was founded in 1908 by Miller and David Williams in Fort Smith Arkansas, which was called Williams Brothers at that time. The company expanded quickly and started building pipeline nationwide for natural gas and petroleum. Which then lead to the relocation in 1919. The company went public in 1957, and was renamed in the 1970s to The Williams Companies, Inc.
In 1966, Williams bought the largest petroleum products pipeline in America at that time, which was known as Great Lakes Pipe Line Company, for about 287 million. In 1983 the company expanded to natural gas transportation with the purchase of Northwest Energy Company and extended their reach to the east coast with the purchase of Transco Energy Company in 1995.
