The Truly Mobile Web - Six Issues We Need to Address First

Summary
Making the Web work for mobile devices. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? The phone’s modem moves traffic to and from the Internet, and its processor can run applications. So, if you ship a browser among those applications and add memory for caching, you can promise your customers a Web that works for mobile devices, right? Everyone – OS providers, device manufacturers, application developers, operators and, most of all, mobile users – have found out that there’s more to it than that, because mobile devices call for a different user experience. Making the Web work on a mobile device – the mobile Web – is not like making it work on a personal computer, where users can get through the day without worrying about page download speed, application responsiveness, frame rates, navigation and battery life. The mobile Web is no longer a nice-to-have; users rely on it to be more productive. So, we in the wireless industry need to address six issues at the heart of productivity and the user experience:
MAIN MESSAGE: WE IN THE WIRELESS INDUSTRY NEED TO ADDRESS SIX ISSUES AT THE HEART OF PRODUCTIVITY AND THE USER EXPERIENCE ON THE MOBILE WEB.

1. faster page downloads and reloads 2. better interactivity with Web applications and pages 3. snappier, smoother response to user commands 4. intelligent quality of service (QoS) in multimedia streams 5. lower overall power consumption 6. Web application functionality and performance on par with native mobile applications, including access to device resources such as file system, camera and sensors This paper offers an introduction to these six issues in light of work done by Qualcomm and Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. (QuIC), and explains the vocabulary of the mobile Web in the terms that wireless carriers, device manufacturers and application developers need to know. (Related papers in this series describe technical details in greater depth.) Readers will find insights into how the industry in general and Qualcomm in particular are optimizing software and hardware for the user experience that the Truly Mobile Web demands.
