What is the legacy of the Middle Ages?
The overall contribution of the Middle Ages to the world as we know it was major. There are many legacies of the Middle Ages and I have listed some important ones below. Some examples include: the compass, the mechanical clock, corrective eyewear, illustrated books, banking and universities. The compass became an extremely important tool for sailors as before the compass was invented, ships sailed close to the shore. The compass was finally replaced by the GPS after a long lasting eight hundred years of impact on civilisation. The mechanical clock were invented in the late 13th century according to various church records stated Redisca (“Top 10 legacies of the Middle Ages, 2009). The corrective eyewear was invented in the late 13th century by Salvino D’Armate who was inspired by Abbas Ibn Firnas’s invention of the magnifying glass approximately four hundred years earlier. The first pairs of glasses did not have temple arms hooking behind the ears so they were very different to modern glasses. There are rare examples of book illustration in the Roman Times. Long before the printing press, artists drew vivid illustrations and artwork with amazing detail and quality. Medieval bankers invented things such as bills, bonds and deposit banking. Basically, Medieval banking had a great impact on today’s banking. It was not until the Middle Ages that universities became existent, schools had existed for centuries but no one was clever enough to think of those who still wanted to learn after they had completed their school years. In the late eleventh century the University of Bologna and the University of Paris were founded and pronounced the first universities, but, they called themselves by the Latin term “Universitas”. In summary, there was not only one or two legacies but many more as I have only listed some.

Abbas Ibn Firnas was a successful inventor because he invented corrective eyewear that is still used to this day.
