Lifespan Development

Growth is a process of increasing in size, the change in weight, height and shape. Development is complex changes including an increase in skills, abilities and capabilities. The different dimensions in development would include physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social.
Mary-Jo – 16 weeks pregnant
Physical
In the next few weeks Mary-Jos baby will double his weight and add inches to his length. Right now, he's about 4 1/2 inches long (head to rump) and 3 1/2 ounces. He now has a recognisable heartbeat, eyes, ears, a mouth, legs and arms. His legs are much more developed, his head is more erect than it has been, and his eyes have moved closer to the front of his head. His ears are close to their final position, too. The patterning of his scalp has begun, though his locks aren't recognizable yet. He's even started growing toenails. And there's a lot happening inside as well.
Mary-Jo will start to feel better she will experience less nausea, fewer mood swings, and "glowing" skin contribute to an overall sense of well-being.
Soon she will experience the feeling of her baby move. Some women feel the baby move as quick as 16 weeks.
Mary-Jo should also be making sure she has a healthy diet, and avoiding anything that can harm the baby, she should not be taking any drugs, smoking or consuming alcohol.

Intellectual
Mary-Jo will be learning about pregnancy, and getting lots of new information. She will be reading lots of books and leaflets on pregnancy and how to care and look after children. She will be learning new words and terms. She will also learning about her health as in what food she should be eating etc.

Emotional
Many women seem more balanced in their feelings with a sense of calmness and acceptance of their pregnancy and everything that goes with it.
Listed below are some common emotional reactions and concerns that women frequently express during the middle months of their pregnancy. This list is far from complete but is a guide to illustrate how universal some of these feelings can be.

Eve – 12 months old
Physical
Eve’s physical development now becomes rapid as childhood begins. At this stage Eves has perfected the art of picking up and manipulating small objects with her hands, she may be interested in more energetic play to strengthen his arms and legs. Eve will now be able to self feed, crawl and to be able to stand up. Eves first steps will soon take place as her gross motor skills will improve. Eve’s body will be more in proportion at 12 months, she will also be developing teeth and have stronger bones. It is important that the child has a good diet and lives in safe environment.

Intellectual
Eve is at the sensori-motor stage, Eve will be learning to use sense and muscle and this helps them sense of their environment. They will suck things, explore objects by touch, taste and hearing etc. Eve will begin to learn more and have a better understanding.

Language
The first development in the process of children using language is the pre-linguistic stage, which is the stage Eve is at. During this stage, eve will rapidly learn how to communicate with their carers. At 12 months, eve will understand what is being said to her and are starting to communicate their needs by pointing or by showing their carers objects. At 12 months, babbling becomes more tuneful and inventive, she will begin to imitate sounds made by carers such as ‘da-da’. This will develop into the use of single words. Eve will begin to respond to simple instructions such as ‘come here’ or ‘clap your hands’ she will understand more than she can say.
