The book To Kill a Mockingbird is written by Harper Lee. The book was publicated in 1960. This book took place in Maycomb Alabama. To Kill a Mockingbird is a story of a young girl growing up in a racially segregated town in Coming of Age Chronicles. The protagonist Scout is raised by her father, Atticus but there are many father figures in the novel including Walter. Atticus and Walter are different in that Atticus values education and bravery but both fathers care deeply for their children.

One reason why Atticus is different than Walter is that Atticus values education. I know that Atticus values education because he teaches Scout how to read and write at a young age. “Scout’s first grade teacher makes her feel bad about being able to read, when she should feel proud that she can read and write at such a young age”. Another way I know that Atticus values education is that he reads to Scout before bed every night. “Parts of Scout’s famous exchange with Atticus as he reads to Scout as Jem sleeps”. Atticus also values education more than Walter because Atticus makes Scout and Jem go to school every day and Walter Cunningham Jr. is almost the same age as Jem but he is in Scout’s class. If Walter values education as much as Atticus then Walter Cunningham Jr. wouldn’t be behind in school.

Atticus is different from Walter because Atticus values bravery. One way that Atticus shows bravery is by defending Tom Robinson. That show bravery because he knew he was going to get criticized and threats of violents. Atticus is also brave because he faced the mob of men outside the jailhouse that were trying to lynch Tom Robinson. Atticus values bravery because he tells Jem and Scout about bravery and wants them to be brave. “Jem also learns important lessons from his father regarding bravery”. Another way I know Atticus values bravery is because he does not approve of guns. Atticus believes that guns are for cowards. “He believes that guns do not make men brave and that children’s fascination with gun is questionable”.
