MEDICINES POLICY
As a childcare provider I understand the need to promote the good health of children attending my setting and as such will ensure that I implement an effective procedure to meet the individual needs of a child when administering medicines.
Procedures
Before a child starts in my care I will discuss the child's medical information and requirements with the child's parents/carers. I will work in partnership with parents/carers to ensure the correct medication, dosage etc is given. I will keep a written record of a child’s need for medication in the child's personal file and ask parents/carers to keep me up to date with any changes to medication as soon as they are made or as reasonably practicable to do so and to sign the updated information in their child's file.
I will only administer medication to a child where prior written permission for that particular medicine has been obtained from the child's parent/carer.
I will only administer non-prescription medication such as pain and fever relief when there is a health reason to do so and will telephone the parent/carer to advise and seek permission on prior to administering.
I will never administer medicines containing aspirin to a child under the age of 16 unless they have been prescribed by a doctor.
I will only administer prescription medication to the child if it has been prescribed for that particular child by a doctor, dentist, nurse or pharmacist and is clearly labelled with the child's details and instructions on dosage and administration.
If the administration of prescription medicine requires technical/medical knowledge then I will attend training from a qualified health
