Marketing Simulations: Patient Engagement The goal for this marketing team is to determine how to market the use of the new personal health record system to various age groups of patients within the organization. Through the patient engagement simulation we were able to determine both short and long term goals to help better serve our potential clients, and the steps that were necessary to allow these goals to be achieved. This paper will show how this simulation is relevant to our potential future careers, and the importance of engaging future health care consumers.

According to James (2013), “people actively involved in their health and health care tend to have better outcomes--and, some evidence suggests, lower costs” (para.1). Patient engagement is one approach to accomplish the goal of better health outcomes, better quality of care, and lower costs. As a result of low patient engagement various health care organizations both private and public are using approaches to better encourage patient engagement. This includes teaching consumers about their conditions and including them more in the decision making pertaining to their care.
The cause of low patient engagement is that many patients may difficulty obtaining, processing, understanding, or communicating the necessary health facts and services. “Those with low levels of health literacy find it difficult to follow instructions on how to care for themselves or to adhere to treatment regimens, such as taking their medicines” (James, 2013, para. 4). As a result, many patients do not have an understanding of health knowledge, or their medical conditions. At one point many physicians and health care organizations did not provide the information that patients needed to make the best judgement about their health care and treatment. Thankfully, that is changing because great efforts are taking place to hold health care organizations responsible for engaging patients.
