“Canopy-cover thematic-map generation for Military Map products using remote sensing data in inaccessible areas”. Anjin Chang, Yangdam Eo, Sunwoong Kim, Yongmin Kim, Yongil Kim Journal: Landscape and Ecological Engineering - LANDSC ECOL ENG , vol. 7, no. 2, pp. 263-274, 2011 This article reveals an independent study of canopy cover: the impact on military structure, and the prediction of invasion routs in South Korea by using digitalized military map with high –resolution satellite image and thematic maps. Four different sets of data were included for this study: Spot-5 VHR satellite images, Quick Bird, Lansat and military maps. Furthermore, combination of different methods were use in order to obtain more accurate information on canopy cover by applying low resolution data, such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Landsat images. Geospatial information was also collected for inaccessible areas by on site examination, and then compered with satellite images, topographic maps. At this time spatial resolution of commercially available satellite ranged from several meters to tens of centimeters from IKONOS, Quick Bird, World View, and Geo Eye. However, the purpose for this study was to apply the classification in order to determine the density measurements, and for this project in order to estimate canopy cover the technique was divided into two categories: medium spatial resolution images, and very high VHR (very high resolution). Additional information to VHR was applied to improve classification by adding information to panchromatic Landsat 7. Problems did occur due to different spatial resolution between VHR satellite images, and Landsat images, because one pixel of Landsat image corresponds to more than 100 VHR image pixels.
