America Lands on moon
The Space Race is now over people, and it looks like America has taken the 1st place trophy home for the keep. Yesterday July 20, 1969 at 20:18 Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were not only the first Americans to land on the moon but also the first people to step foot on its surface. Together they collected about 47 pounds of moon rocks with Armstrong spending about 3 hours on the surface and Aldrin spend less time at about 2. On July 16, 1969 the world watched on live TV in awe as Apollo 11 made its way off to the rocky surface of the moon from Kennedy Space Center. Aboard was astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Three days later Apollo 11 entered lunar orbit after traveling about 240,000 miles from Earth in just about 75 hours. On the next day a manned ship named Eagle was released with Neil and Buzz in control. Touching down just two hours later the Eagle landed on the southern edge of the moon. Immediately Neil recited his famous statement “The Eagle has landed”! A nickel ahead of the original schedule, Neil opened the lunar lander. Recording his way down the lander was a camera attached to the craft sending it back to millions of people watching at home. About 10 minutes later he said one of the most famous quotes in history “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Right after he set his first foot on the rocky surface of the moon Buzz joined him shortly after.
