“Please send Katherine Howel to the office with her books.” Said the principal over the loudspeaker. “Yes!” I exclaimed because I knew my mom was at school to pick me up early. I didn’t know why but I didn’t care because I was going home early. I wasn’t having the most exciting day in my 4th grade class. We were in the middle of a spelling test which was dead boring. I gathered my books and hurried down the hallway with the slightest concern of why she was picking me up early. I met up with her and we headed to the car. “Mama, why are all our belongings in the car?” I questioned. “Because we are moving.” She explained. “Moving where?” I asked with concern. “To Houston.” She stated non-chalantly. “Why are we moving to Houston?” I asked. “Because its time for a change.” She responded. I was raised with respect, so I didn’t dare argue with her. She told me we were going say goodbye to my grandparents, who also lived in New Iberia. New Iberia was the place I called home up until today. My grandparents were just as shocked as I was when they heard the news. The tears started to pour from everybody’s eyes. I was always spoiled by my grandparents, so being apart from them would not be easy. “No mama I don’t want to leave!” I cried out. “I know Toshia but we have to go.” She said as tears poured from her eyes also. “Just leave her with us, we will take care of her.” My grandma cried. “No mama I can’t do that.” My mom explained to my grandma. “You can’t just take her away from us like that!” My grandpa said with angry tears flowing from his eyes. “Yes I can! She is my daughter! We are leaving now.” My mama argued back with my grandpa. “Hug them and give them a kiss so we can leave.” She said. I hugged my grandparents and gave them a kiss as tears streamed down my face. We got in the car and headed down the highway. We arrived in Houston 4 hours later at my aunt’s house. I then learned that this is where we would be staying until my mom was able to get a job and get on her feet. Since school was in walking distance my mom thought it was perfect.
