Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide. It accounts for more than 600,000 deaths each year. Most people that are diagnosed with liver cancer are men 45 years or older. The majority of the time when cancer is found in the liver, it originated elsewhere in the body. The only time cancer found in the liver is called “liver cancer” is when the cancer originated in the liver. (American, 2014) Liver cancer mainly affects the liver and bile ducts. Liver cancer also causes side effects in other parts of the body. These side effects include, low blood sugar levels, high red blood cell count, high cholesterol, and high blood calcium. Other common symptoms of liver cancer include jaundice, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, enlarged liver or spleen. (American, 2014) Low blood sugar occurs due to the impairment of glycogen production. Low blood sugar can lead to feeling shaky, hungry, or sweaty. You may even feel faint. If low blood sugar isn’t corrected, it can lead to confusion and disorientation. Severe cases can cause coma and/or death.
High red blood cell count, also called polycythaemia, occurs due to the tumor(s) secreting excess erythropoietin (EPO). Side effects from having polycythaemia include blurred vision, muscle pain, and dizziness. If left untreated, severe cases can cause chest pains and high blood pressure. People with polycythaemia are also at increased risk for DVT and blood clots which can lead to heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and/or death.
High blood calcium generally occurs in the very late stages of cancer. This happens when the cancer causes calcium to leak from the bones and into the bloodstream. Side effects from mild hypercalcemia include fatigue and excessive tiredness. Moderate high levels can cause an increase in kidney stones, excess urinary output and in some cases heart dysrhythmias. Severe levels of hypercalcemia have been associated with coma and death if not corrected quickly.
Another late stage symptom of liver cancer is jaundice. Jaundice is caused when the bile ducts are blocked and bilirubin builds up in the blood. This increase can lead to weakness, weight loss, itchy skin, and dark colored urine and stool. More advanced stages of jaundice can cause nausea and vomiting, rectal bleeding, swelling of the legs, and in time confusion.
LIVER CANCER Liver cancer or hepatic cancer is a cancer that originates in the liver. Liver cancers are malignant tumors that grow on the surface or inside the liver. There are many forms of liver cancer, although many cancers found in the liver are metastases from other tumors. The most frequent liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma. About 4 of 5 cancers that start in the liver are this type. HCC can have different growth patterns; some begin as a single tumor that grows…
Cancer is a genetic disease because it can be traced to alteration within specific genes, but in most cases, it is not an inherited disease. The genetic alterations that lead to most cancers arise in the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of a somatic cell during the lifetime of affected individual. Because of these genetic changes, cancer cells proliferate uncontrollably, producing malignant tumour that invade surrounding healthy tissue. As long as the growth of tumour remains localized, the disease can…

Cancer Strategy #7: An Overload Of Toxins Causes Cancer... Reducing Toxic Overload Vital For Eliminating Cancer An eminent German oncologist says that cancer is caused by environmental toxins. Others agree. While there are obviously other issues, fungus, viruses, genetics, etc., the major change in the world that could have lead to the explosion of cancer over the last 100 years has been the introduction of tens of thousands of chemicals into the environment. Chemicals that we had never been…

What is the role of infectious agents in Cancer? Since the 20th century it has been known that some infections play role in the development of certain cancers in animals, more recently however, certain viral, bacterial and parasitic infections have been recognised as risk factors for several types of cancers in humans. Worldwide, around 20% of all cancers are caused by infectious agents. Infectious agents can disrupt the cell cycle, cause chronic inflammation or suppress the host’s immune system…

infections. Cancer. 2-4% of all cancer cases are related to alcohol. Upper digestive tract cancers are the most common, hitting the esophagus, mouth, larynx, and pharynx. Women who drink prior to menopause are more likely to develop breast cancer. Your risk of skin cancer doubles if you drink slightly more than "moderate levels." Some studies implicate alcohol in colon, stomach, pancreas and lung cancer. And let's not forget the liver... Liver disease. Heavy drinking can cause fatty liver, hepatitis…
in the walls of the stomach and small intestine. From there, it travels from the stomach to the brain which sedates the actions of nerve cells. Alcohol is also carried into the bloodstream to the liver, which eliminates the alcohol by ‘metabolizing’ where it is converted into a nontoxic substance. The liver can only metabolize a certain amount and leaves the excess alcohol to circulate throughout the body. Therefore the intensity of inebriations is directly correlated with how much a person drinks…
