Lessons from Atticus
“We can never judge the life of others, because each person knows only their own pain and renunciation” (Paula Coelho). In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by
Harper Lee, Atticus teaches Scout and Jem to never judge people until you understand their circumstances. No one can truly understand a person until they see things from their point of view. Atticus once told Scout,” you never really understands a person until you consider things from his point of view…. until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Harper Lee pg. 39). Unless we know the circumstances of the person, we should not judge him. Many people choose to judge others based off of their appearances, however, this often leads to false conclusions. Mrs. Dubose as mean: they hated her. After Mrs. Dubose’s death they realized that she had been addicted to morphine, and she was trying her best to quit. Knowing this, Jem and Scout realized how brave she was . Another character who was wrongly viewed was Boo Radley. Scout and Jem had believed Boo was a monster until Scout saw him at the end of the book. Scout finally understood Boo when she viewed things from her perspective. "Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time... it's because he wants to stay inside” ( Lee pg. 304).
