Leadership Qualities Many people learn to be apprehensive when they hear the word ‘compassion’ spoken especially men as society expects them to not express their feelings. That is not so for Henry V in Shakespeare’s Henry V, Henry a former idle prince takes on the responsibility of being king of Britain in wake of his fathers’ death while displaying many respectable qualities throughout the play. Some of those qualities include: compassion, knowledge, intelligence, inspiring people, resolve, and graciousness.
Qualities like knowledge and compassion are important in the world of counselling because if you can’t determine how to assist your patient, you wouldn’t be able to fix their problem nor will you be able to empathize with them. Such as when Henry is deciding whether or not he should go to war,
We charge you in the name of God, take heed,
For never two such kingdoms did contend
Without much fall of blood, whose guiltless drops
Are every one a woe, a sore complaint
'Gainst him whose wrong gives edge unto the swords
That make such waste in brief mortality.
(Henry V: I.ii.25-30)
However, in order to get what you want to say across to your client you need to be able to delegate it, something that Henry proves when he stirs his vastly outnumbered troops for battle against the French in perhaps the most well-known speech in the entire play,
This story shall the good man teach his son,
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.
(Henry V: IV.iii.57-69) Sometimes it takes longer than usual to find a resolution for your customer, a time like this is when you need resolve to push through and find the answer. Henry faced this when he decided to become king of France,
We hope to make the sender blush at it.
Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour
That may give furth'rance to our expedition;
For we have now no thought in us but France,
Save those to God, that run before our business.
(Henry V: I.ii.324-28)
There might come a time when there are disagreements between either the patient(s) or between you the counsellor and the patient(s). Or they do something that might be considered discourteous. This is when graciousness comes into play, for the
