The Life and Remembrance of Joseph Tilden
From reading Joseph Tilden’s will and reviewing his probate it became clear to see that he was ill when writing his will due to his statement “being weak in the body but of sound and perfect memory”. Although he is ill, he knows exactly what he is writing and who will be getting what. Joseph also mentions God multiple times, this gives off the unknown fact that he is religious. Not only is he a very religious man, but he is also a man of his word and is very honest as well as loyal. This can be seen when he repeatedly states that he wants his debts and duties to be paid off and taken care of more than anything. Joseph was more than likely a wealthy man as he owned much land, and had a great amount of money. Joseph is also a very family oriented man as wants to bring nothing but happiness and a carefree, hassle free life to his children, wife and his own brother and sister. He is very generous and giving as he plans to give them each money and goods as well as debt being taken care of and paid off.
Joseph must be a firm believer in the Lord, Jesus Christ as he repeatedly states that he is giving his soul up to him and wishes to be freed of all sins. The fact that the land is going to his sons, gives off a sense that males were more known to be in charge and run things better. Males were known as the more dominant and were better able to control things. However, if one of Tilden’s son was to pass before the age of twenty-one, he would want the land to be divided to his children, both males and females. Elizabeth is also in charge of caring for all of this until the children come to the age of twenty-one or until the day one of his daughters is to wed, that is if she chooses to wed before she is twenty-one. His three daughters are given money, each of different amounts which give us the hint that maybe the most money goes to the eldest, and the least money goes to the youngest. This can easily be related to how things are down today in modern society and how the
