Blood Vessels
Describe each of the 5 different blood vessels found in the body.

Arteries:
Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the tissues of the body. Thick walls allow high pressure blood flow to be able to pump the blood around the body.Arteries have three layers:
Intima – the inner layer made of smooth tissue called endothelium
Media – layer of muscle that allows high pressure blood flow
Adventitia – anchors arteries to nearby tissues, Connective tissue
The arteries connect to capillaries to allow diffusion of oxygen into cells

Arterioles:
As arteries get smaller they become known as arterioles, these are small, strong with thick walls for their size. They contain a high percentage of smooth muscle. They also carry blood away from the heart and out to the tissues of the body. These are very important in blood pressure regulation.
