John Winston Lennon was an English musician who rose to prominence as a founder member of the rock group the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in history of popular music. He was born in war-time England, on October 9th 1940 in Liverpool. At age 15 he formed the Quarrymen, a band named after Quarry bank High School, after they had performed once, Lennon had met Paul McCartney at their second performance which led to Paul joining. John and Paul had a songwriting partnership that was like no other. They have produced some of the most moving and touching lyrics that are still taking notice decades later. George Harrison later joined the band as lead guitarist. In 1960, the group decided to change their name from the Quarrymen to the Beatles. Soon after, Ringo Star joined the band as drummer completing the four-piece line-up that would endure until the group's break-up in 1970. When the band separated in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the iconic songs such as “Give Peace a Chance" and "Working Class Hero". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Highly controversial through his political and peace activism, in 1971, his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a drawn out attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while some of his songs were implemented as anthems by the anti-war movement and other parts of society.
