Is multiculturalism beneficial or detrimental to Canadian society? In Canada, “every individual has the right to the equal protection and benefit of the law without discrimination and that everyone has the freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief, opinion, expression, peaceful, assembly and association, and is guaranteed those rights and freedom equally”(Canadian Multiculturalism Act). Multiculturalism means that people with many races, religious beliefs, cultural traditions, languages and ethnic backgrounds living together with equal rights and responsibility. As “the government of Canada recognizes the diversity of Canadians as regards race, national or ethnic origin, color and religion as a fundamental characteristic of Canadian society.”(Canadian Multiculturalism Act) The government of Canada also “committed to a policy of multiculturalism designed to preserve and enhance the multicultural heritage of Canadians while working to achieve the equality of all Canadians in the economic, social, cultural and political life of Canada.”(Canada Multiculturalism Act) Pierre Trudeau made Canada multiculturalism by law in 1972. Multiculturalism makes different background’s people closer and improves the development. “Canada is often refereed to as a cultural mosaic; built by a society that respects and celebrates the cultures of many countries from around the world.”(Living in Canada: Found on cultural diversity) For recent years, more and more people who from different countries immigrate to Canada. “According to recent Canadian immigration information, Canada has 34 ethnic groups with at least one hundred thousand members each and we remain one of the countries with the highest per capita immigration rate in the world.”(Living in Canada: Found on cultural diversity) Most of these immigrants immigrated because of the economic, family, and humanitarian. Canada immigrants also improve Canada’s economy. Multiculturalism is beneficial to Canada society because multiculturalism could make people of different backgrounds closer and improve Canada’s social development. Canada has low birth rate so they need workers and Canada provides good home for refugees. “The core value of multiculturalism is that all humans share similar aspirations, fears and needs. All humans deserve equal rights and protections from their government regardless of their background.”(Has Multiculturalism in Canada lost its way?) “Multiculturalism is the product of a particular era is the era of great social change and the particular;” “the new changes include areas of family, marriage, religion, education and race relation and even closely related to the international context.” “One of the other benefits of multiculturalism is that it acts as a filter. Multiculturalism debate also shows the progress of society itself, reflecting the successful integration of all races.”
