Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation comes from within a person, when a person has the drive and passion and loves what they are doing. Extrinsic motivation is doing something that you can benefit from. While they are similar they can be very different. When you look at a person that dreads their job and only goes to produce a paycheck this is extrinsic motivation, but if the person loves their job and enjoys being there then that would be intrinsic motivation.

Some examples of intrinsic motivation would be
1. A person loves going to school to achieve good grades and likes the social aspect.
2. Studying something because you want to know more about the matter.
3. Compete against yourself in a sport to get better.
4. Doing the right thing and not just because you will receive a reward or because of punishment, but just because it is the right thing to do.
5. Joining a team, not wanting to but to make someone else happy to find out that you enjoy the way it makes feel.

Some example of extrinsic motivation would be
1. Play sports only to keep your scholarship not because you love to run.
2. Going to school just so you can get the grades to graduate.
3. A relationship is good in the beginning, but then one leaves because the other has no money, lost their job or clearly is happy elsewhere.
4. Bribing a child with a reward for cleaning their room.
5. Competing in a talent contest
