Current Event BCFN12 Katie Shi Block A NICE ‘Indian’ Trust Funds When : From March 31 to April 2, 2014 Where : Enoch, Alberta the National Indigenous Council of Elders (NICE) Who : First Nations, Metis, Inuit What : The NICE is hosting a three day forum on ‘Indian’ Trust Funds. This conference is the fourth of a series created by NICE through the forum called The Creation of Wealth helping advance indigenous understanding and capacity for sustainability and self-reliance. Topics to be addressed include: negotiating compensation Trusts; designing Trusts based on traditional concepts; Supreme Court rulings and how wealth can work collectively and benefit Indigenous economies. Why : I chose this article because I am interested in financial area and I think it is a great opportunity to lead Indigenous people toward determining sustainable self-reliance for first nation’s future generations. Implications : attending this forum will provide opportunities to examine the various types of ‘Indian Trusts’ in Canada and help us understand how they operate.
