In order to become a more effective communicator in the relationships in my life, I am aiming to develop the interpersonal skill of direct communication. Presently, I utilize the negative communication conflict strategy of sarcasm in my daily conversations and in addition to communicating my feelings in a conflict situation. I find myself using sarcasm as a way to indirectly address issues that I am faced with. The effect that my use of sarcasm is having on my interpersonal relationships is negative and it is damaging many of the bonds that I have worked hard to form. Normally when sarcasm is used, I am trying to protect myself. When another person offends my belief system or comfort level, I respond with sarcastic comments to hide what I really feel. This tendency is damaging to my relationships because others perceive this that I don’t care about what they are saying or respect their opinions. I use sarcasm regualrly, so this will be a challenge to me, but it will be an experience that will benefit me long-term if I embrace it.

In order to resolve this issue in my communication pattern, I have developed a multiple step plan of action. The first step is to inform the people I am around the most about this assignment and enlist them to help. I asked three of the girls I live with, Laura, Kenzie, and Abi, and two of my other friends, Mark and Jeff to help me attempt to alter my behavior.
