Workplace policies and procedures: Risk Assessments are a legal requirement mainly under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, although most health and safety legislation requires a risk assessment approach.

Risk Assessments must be recorded. This could be in the CYPD’s, Generic Risk Assessment booklets or on the risk assessment form, At the nursery I use risk assessments, I have them in each room and are done in the morning before the children come in to the nursery and again before the afternoon children come in, the risk assessment forms are given in to Caroline at the end off the week so she can go through them, risks should be assessed periodically, following an accident, on the introduction of any new process/equipment and also any change in circumstances. When we go on trip out of the nursery we have to fill out a risk assessment that has two parts, showing the dealt of, date, times, who is going out on the trip i.e. staff and children, who is the first aide, phone numbers of the staff who is on the trip, parents numbers, route of the trip and what maybe the risk on the outing i.e. cars. One part of the risk assessment goes out on the trip and the other part stays at the nursery in a place we can get to easy.

Fire An outbreak of fire in the nursery can be extremely serious. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, there is a legal requirement for the nursery to have an up to date fire risk assessment. This should identify all sources of heat with the potential to cause fire e.g. gas heaters, cookers etc. and also consider the storage of combustible materials. We have fire drills once a month so the children and staff can follow the correct processes in case of a fire. we also have fire blankets.

Accidents Even in a safety conscious Nursery, accidents may still occur. This is how we deal with them. All accidents to our staff or pupils will be recorded on a correct form and investigated, as appropriate to find out what happened and how any similar incident can be avoided. Under the First Aid at Work Regulations 1981, employers have to ensure that there are adequate and appropriate equipment and facilities for providing first aid in the workplace. This should include arrangements for first aid based on a risk assessment of the nursery.

Awareness raising
( Our induction training for staff clear explanation of health and safety issues so that all adults are able to adhere to our policy and procedures as they understand their shared responsibility for health and safety. The induction training covers matters of employee well-being, including safe lifting and the storage of potentially dangerous substances.
( Records are kept of these induction training sessions and new staff are asked to sign the records to confirm that they have taken part.
( Health and safety issues are explained to the parents of new children so that they understand the part played by these issues in the daily life of the setting.
( As necessary, health and safety training is included in the annual training plans of staff, and health and safety is discussed regularly at staff meetings.
