Human Trafficking

Human trafficking goes hand in hand with slavery and is a problem that society keeps overlooking, even though; it has and will continue to affect millions of people. Trafficking is a type of slavery involving the trade or transport of people or goods. Human trafficking pertains only to the recruitment, transportation, and harboring by force or third person party (SANTAC “Definition). Men, women and children are exposed to trafficking. In most cases, women and children are reported to have been involved in commercial sexual exploitation and child domestic labor (SANTAC” Role”). Human trafficking is not only an issue in the United States. It is a crisis spreading nationwide. It has increasingly advanced within Asia and Europe. Trafficking primarily involves exploitation which comes in many forms. It includes forcing victims into prostitution, subjecting victims to slavery or involuntary servitude, compelling victims to commit sex acts for the purpose of creating pornography and misleading victims into debt bondage (Horen). The majority of victims of sex trafficking are women and girls. The victims are lured into situations of sex trafficking by a promise of a good job in another country, a false marriage proposal turned into a bondage situation, being sold into the sex trade by parents and husbands and in most cases kidnapped by traffickers. Victims are frequently subjected to debt bondage, an illegal practice in which the traffickers tell their victims that they owe money (which often relate the victims living expenses and transport into the country) and that they must pledge their personal services to repay the debt (“Sex Trafficking”). The traffickers use many methods in order to gain physical, mental and emotional dependence of the victims. These methods consist of starvation, confinement, physical abuse, rape and gang raped, forced drug use, and threats of violence towards the families of the victims. These methods can lead to many physical and psychological health problems. There are many countries around the world in which people are trafficked and these countries are referred to as the sources. Cambodia, China, Vietnam South Korea and many more are where traffickers go to lure their victims.
