Alopecia is the partial or complete loss of hair—especially on the scalp—either in patches (alopecia areata), on the entire head (alopecia totalis), or over the entire body (alopecia universalis). However I will mainly be focusing on alopecia universalis. Alopecia universalis (AU) is a condition characterized by complete loss of hair on the scalp and body. It is a severe form of alopecia areata, which refers to hair loss of unknown cause characterized by round patches of complete baldness. Alopecia universalis is thought to be an autoimmune condition that occurs in some genetically-predisposed people. Hair loss occurs when a person's immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles.
There are four main symptoms of AU, absence of body hair, baldness, absence of eyelashes, and absence of eyebrows. Alopecia universalis can occur at any age, and is currently believed to be an autoimmune disorder. There is no standard treatment for alopecia universalis. Spontaneous regrowth is always a possibility, even for those with 100% hair loss over many years. However, it is not possible to predict when regrowth will occur. Many treatments have been explored, including immunomodulatory agents such as imiquimod. Tofacitinib citrate may also have benefits.However, there is one solution.
