Like other doctors surgeons must complete a Doctor of Medicine degree from an approved medical school.
To go to medical school you have to first complete a 4-year bachelor degree.
Applicants also need to write the Medical College Admission Test. Most medical school take the scores of these tests in account as well as your college grades.
Medical school takes 4 years to complete.

After medical school graduates complete a surgeon residency (or on job training), which takes a minimum of 5 years.
Graduates who want to specialize in a harder level of a particular type of surgery can go to a fellowship program after the residency is earned.
Surgeons can also become a part of the American Board of Medical Specialists which usually involves written and oral exams.
In addition all surgeons must earn a license to practice in the state where they’ll be working.
