110 full-time and voluntary surgeons representing The Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center has a mission to provide first-rate, state-of-the-art quality care to all our patients. Surgeons are required to perform comprehensive general surgery examinations. The surgeon takes a medical history and performs a detailed physical examination of the patient, then makes a diagnosis based on the information she has obtained. The surgeon develops a treatment plan specific to the patient that incorporates their findings, and modifies it as necessary. A patient who has vascular disease, for example, might require special attention to potential complications during surgery. The surgeon shares their recommendations with the patient, performs the surgery and manages the aftercare.
