Australian hospitality is made up of many sectors and services that aid in providing products for numerous consumer markets. This essay will define the sector range, scope and operational characteristics of the hotel and resort sector in Australian Hospitality which offers consumers with a range of accommodation levels that are often combined with services such as food and beverage, entertainment and recreational facilities. The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) was established in 1839, and represents the welfares of more than 5,000 members across Australia with a branch operating in each state and territory and a national office based in Canberra (Australian Hotel Association – About, 2009). The AHA provides Australian Hospitality with a sector range, scope and operational characteristics for the hotel and resort sector which will be demonstrated throughout this essay.
The hotel and resort sector of the Australian Hospitality scope range is made up of 1-5 star accommodation including hotels, resorts, residential, pubs and taverns with possible services including accommodation, food and beverage, entertainment and recreational facilities. Resorts includes 3 -5 star, beach and country venues with possible facilities the same as for hotels plus offering activities. The most recent survey published by ABS in 2006 says that were 3,454 hotel businesses operating in Australia with estimated average revenue of $11.1 billion. In 2008 IBISWorld estimated that at June 2008 this number had grown to 4,017 hotels in Australia with total estimated revenue at $14.4 billion (Coopers 2009 p.20). This sector provides more than 270,000 with employment (Australian Hotel Association – Industry Data, 2009) and are major consumers of produce locally supplied and produced which aid in helping fund local community organisations. Hotels and resorts also offer an important function as an entertainment venue and as a meeting place for tourists and those living locally.
The scope of the hotel and resort sector in the Australian Hospitality industry is how many establishments it has, its economic contribution and the inbound markets that travel to Australia to stay at these places. In the year ending December 2011 there were a total of 4,241 establishments in Australia which gave a total takings of $65 million from accommodation. (Tourism Research Australia – Facts and Figures, p.10). This figure contributes to Tourisms direct contribution to Australia’s GDP of $34.6 billion which is equal to 2.5% of GDP in 2010-11. As at 2013 ‘Hotels provide more than $75 million each year in support to sporting and community organisations’ (Australian Hotel Association – Industry Data, 2009). This is a huge economic contribution to communities and will provide them with opportunities that they may not have had otherwise. In 2011 the top three visitor arrivals to Australia were France (79.5 million visitors), USA (62.3 million visitors) and China (57.6 million visitors). This differed slightly however when looking at the visitor receipts in the same year with the top three being USA ($116.3 billion), Spain ($59.9 billion) and France ($53.8 billion) (Tourism Research Australia – Facts and Figures, p. 3). These facts and figures show that there is a diverse inbound market in the Australian Hospitality Industry with tourists coming from Europe and USA and Asia. Therefore it is important that the Australian Hospitality industry has a range of

find an alternative destination. Bali Tourism can offer people who were booked to go to Thailand a discounted rate on hotels or entertainment if they choose to go to Bali instead of Thailand. This will help promote Bali and Bali tourism in a positive light and will help bring people who would have gone to Thailand over to Bali. Market segmentation Whilst the younger Australians continue to flock to the region, there is a need to move away from promoting to this market segment as they do not fit…
