A health insurance exchange, which is also known as a Health Insurance Marketplace, is a set of government regulated and standardized health care plans in the United States. The Marketplace is a new way to find health coverage that helps people who do not have coverage or people who have coverage but want other options of coverage. When using the Health Insurance Marketplace, the applicant will fill out an application and will be able to see all the available health plans available in their area. The information that the applicant must provide in order to determine the best coverage is their household size and income to see if they are able to get lower costs on premiums for private plans. The applicants are also able to see if they qualify for free or low cost coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP (Marketplace). Most Americans will be able to use the Marketplace and can apply for coverage in three ways: online, by mail, or in person. All insurance plans are offered by private companies, but the Marketplace is run by the state or the federal government depending on where the person lives. The Marketplace will make information simple about prices and benefits for people to understand so there is no confusion about what type of insurance they should be enrolled in. A bonus to the Marketplace is that these applicants are also able to compare multiple plans to choose what is right for them as far as the amount of coverage and premiums they are paying.
