Barrior Methods ­ are methods that block the meeting of egg and sperm by means of a physical barrier (such as condoms, diaphragms or cervical caps) or a chemical barrier
(such as spermicide and sponges).
Hormonal Methods ­ refers to birth control that contains synthetic estrogen and/or progestin (such as oral contraceptives, progestin­only pills, contraceptive patch, vaginal rings, contraceptive injections, implantable rods).
Behavioral Methods
­ these methods rely on one or both partners altering their sexual behavior (such as withdrawal, abstinence, fertility awareness methods).
Surgical Methods ­ can prevent pregnancy permanently (such as sterilization, tubal ligation, hysterectomy, vasectomy). How does an intrauterine device (IUD) work to prevent pregnancy? IUD affects the way sperm and egg move thereby preventing fertilization. It is placed in the uterus through the cervix and is left there for 5 to 10 years at a time and can be removed by a clinician. Both surgical contraceptives, female and male sterilization, are highly effective and permanent and has no effect on a woman's or man's sex drive.
