Course Description
The emphasis in this course is placed on providing the student with a wide range of learning experiences on health related topics. As a result of these experiences, the student should have the knowledge to make and apply sound decisions to gain and maintain positive personal health behaviors and attitudes. In addition, this course will cover the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program from the Department of Public Safety in the state of Georgia.

Objectives: By the end of the course, the student should be able to:








Assess current personal health status.
Define terms related to various body structures and systems such as the reproductive, respiratory and nervous systems.
Describe the function of various body structures and systems.
Identify health problems related to various body structures and systems and describe care procedures for preventing and/or treating these health problems.
Describe the hazards of substances such as tobacco, legal, and illegal drugs including Alcohol.
Understand essential concepts about nutrition and diet.
Describe mental and social health problems and prevention of those problems.

Grading Procedure

A student’s grade will be determined by their performance in the following areas:

Make up work
Arrangements to make up any missed material due to an absence must be made within two days of the student’s return to school. The student is responsible for asking the teacher about these arrangements. Students are also responsible for any missed notes due to absence. Unexcused absences will fall under rules identified in the St. Pius X handbook for make up work.

Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program
At the end of this section, students will take a cumulative test covering information provided by the
Georgia Department of Transportation. A grade of 70% or better will earn the student an ADAP card which signifies a passing grade on the test. This card is mandatory for the student to obtain a valid driver’s license in the state of Georgia (does not apply to a learner’s permit). If the student does not pass with a 70% or better, he/she must retake the test, however, the original grade will count toward the student’s health class grade, not the makeup.

Current Events
Students will be asked to bring in four (4) Health Related current event articles throughout the semester, dates to be announced. For each article students will be asked to answer a set of questions and provide a short written synopsis. They will also be asked to give a 2 – 3 minute oral presentation identifying the major points and their opinion of the article.

Substance Abuse Group Project
Students will be asked to choose a topic (Alcohol, Marijuana, LSD, Cocaine, Club Drugs etc…), research and create a Power Point / Google Doc presentation or movie that follows the requirements of the project. They will also be asked to develop a 6 – 8 minute group presentation covering the information within your project.
