Peapod Shopping: Ethical or Un-ethical When students go off to college, they usually gain the Freshman Fifteen, which is when the gain fifteen pounds during their freshman year of college. Some people wonder whether or not it’s a way to prevent these pounds, but also just to eat healthy. This brings the question: Are college students better off buying their food ethically or with no restrictions? Based off of this list, two peapod trips were made. There was a trip that had no restrictions and there was trip that had restrictions. He list with restrictions could contain organic products that included humanely treated meat and dairy products, but they could not have GMOs. Throughout this paper three components will be explained: The Financial Situation, The Health Effects, and Time and Effort. The budget that was given was fifty- five dollars for food to last for 2 weeks. The easiest list to shop for was the list that had no restrictions. The food would most definitely last for two weeks. The second list was mainly organic food, which was more expensive. The list with no restrictions had a subtotal of $53.96. The second shopping list with restrictions had a subtotal of $50.16. Both lists contained some of the same products. Both had the Broccoli Florets by Foxy Organics, which was $ 3.69 for a 9 ounce bag. The prices of the dairy products were very different. For The list with no restriction, it had a half gallon of Dean’s Milk Vitamin D for $2.49. The organic list had a 64 ounce of Horizon Organic Whole Milk for $4.99. There is a big difference in between the prices. There is a dollar difference in between the two products. The restriction list mainly was filled with vegetables because there wasn’t much a person could really find. As for the list with no restrictions, it had enough food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for two full weeks. Although the non restriction list probably has more fatty food, it is logical for a college student because most college students don’t have a lot of money so this would be good for their budget.
According to many people, Organic food would be considered the healthiest. A Stanford University study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine last week showed that eating organic produce and meat reduces a consumer’s level of pesticide ingestion and exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria (Imus, 2012). This was basically saying that when vegetables are in farms, the farmer would spray pesticide on the products so they wouldn’t be eaten by bugs. Due to people eating organic food, the consumer will absorb more antibiotic- resistant bacteria that will reduce the pesticide. Most grocery store products contain GMOs, such as canned products and packaged foods. What people don’t know is that GMOs are extremely harmful to the body. According to Stephen Lendman, over 80% of all processed foods contain them. Others include grains like rice, corn and wheat; legumes like soybeans and soy products; vegetable oils, soft drinks; salad dressings; vegetables and fruits; dairy products including eggs; meat, chicken, pork and other
