The Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin A Game of Thrones is set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, a land reminiscent of medieval Europe. Fifteen years prior to the novel, the Seven Kingdoms were torn apart by a civil war, known as the “War of the Usurper." Prince Rhaega Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark angering her family and of her fiancé, Lord Robert Baratheon. The Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen had Lyanna' father and brother executed when they demanded her safe return. Her second brother, Eddard, joined his boyhood friend Robert Baratheon and Jon Arryn in declaring war against the ruling Targaryen dynasty. The King’s main reason for visiting is to offer Eddard Stark the honor of becoming his Hand (most trusted advisor). Eddard unhappily accepts and he must move to King’s Landing in the South. Eddard Stark’s son Bran is injured during the King’s visit, while this is thought to be an accident that occurred when he was climbing it happens that the Jamie Lannisters played a part in this tragedy. Jon Snow, Eddard’s bastard son, joins the “Black” or the “Night’s Watch”, a company of men whose role is to guard a huge wall of ice in the far North. He is accompanied there by Tyrion Lannister, a dwarf. Although they do not become friends they end up with a grudging respect for each other. Once Jon has pledged himself to the “Black” he must forsake friends, family, marriage and children and his whole life will be spent in the protection of Land.
I have just finished the first book and I must say that the political themes found in this first installment remind me very easily of my own government with the exception of the public killings. The author has done an exceptional job developing charters quickly but with care and depth so that you get to see several different sides of them. I must say that my two favorite characters would have to be John Snow and Tyrion Lannister because they seem to be the underdogs of their respective families but at the same time they are also the savors. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to starting
