Pristine clearness abounds as I calmly breathe the dulcet, clean air. The thick cover of snow continues to fall, covering the remaining treetops rising from the earth as if trying to get a final glimpse before commencing to a wintertime sleep. The tracks of others who dared to be alone are soon gone, and I am left to enjoy a seemingly untouched, unadulterated playground. The eloquent silence brings an aura of tranquility, a sensation unable to be found in such an otherwise frenzied and chaotic world. I sit for a moment more, treat myself to a handful of snow, and decide to start my descent. Free here to be the master of my fate and the captain of my soul, I carve an irrational and playful line, through the trees, bounding from stones, floating upon the white. Time is nonexistent. This mountain paradise, and worries escape my consciousness with such ease. Escaping to the backcountry, with no designated certainty, no right or wrong, and no predispositions, I can enjoy being lost. Signs soon signify approaching trails to the left and right, but I feel no want nor need to be found. Indeed I have wandered into the unknown. (L)G(BT): How “It Gets Better” is Making Things Worse “Living well is the best revenge,” or so says Dan Savage’s partner Terry in the couple’s renowned “It Gets Better” video. The eight-minute video has, at its roots, a seemingly simple and laudable purpose: to convince struggling LGBT teenagers that their lives will improve. But literary critic Jasbir Puar wisely questions the less apparent consequences of Savage’s video. “It gets better” sometimes, but a lot of times it doesn’t. And while the…
stagnant wages, and rising living costs. Making matters worse, the struggle does not appear to be ending anytime soon. The Federal Reserve’s wealth effect is in short supply. According to a new report from the central bank, 25 percent of American households say their families are “just getting by” financially, and another 13 percent are “finding it difficult to get by.” Compared to five years earlier, 34 percent feel like they are worse off today, while the same number feel about the same. Only…
down [Hook:] Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worse Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worse You're tryna fix something but you can't fix what you can't see It's the soul that needs the surgery (Uh huh huh) [Verse 2:] Blonder hair, flat chest TV says, "Bigger is better." South beach, sugar free Vogue says, "Thinner is better." [Pre-Hook:] Just another stage, pageant the pain away This…
corruption in America, reduce the amount of alcohol consumed by the average person and create an overall better standard of living for the average American but not the minorities as they were not liked at time. However due to the already existing underground crime and the nature of American society the prohibition was not successful and almost all of things they aimed to improve changed for the worse or did not change at all. The most obvious aim of prohibition is to do what the words says to, that…
* Psychological * Social impact * Budgetary impact (lower tax revenue, higher expenditures) The different types of unemployment have different costs. Costs of frictional unemployment - very low (and may be negative) as may lead to a better fit between worker and job and greater long run output. Costs of structural unemployment - much greater as out of work for much longer periods – lower output, loss of skills (human capital), psychological costs, social costs, significant budgetary…
sickness because as a child my mother would not allow me to leave the house to play outside or do anything if I did not go to school and this was worse punishment than anything I could imagine. The fact that I could not go to practice or even play outside was far worse then feeling awful and sick in my bed because I had to go outside or else I felt even worse. In high school I did not miss one class from a sickness even if I felt awful because I knew my mom would not allow me to go to practice or go…
Change Over Time As a young, ignorant child, I had always perceived the world was filled with people who were better than myself. Like most adolescents, personal image and how others perceive you was extremely important. I wasn’t much different. I compared myself to everybody I came into contact with and it always seemed that whoever surrounded me was in better shape and also better looking. Irritated by my poor self-image, I began to exercise more than five days a week and started purchasing…
Matt Bernards Period 6 5-29-13 Is child behavior better or worse than it was years ago? 1. “Parents who try to discipline their children by just telling them to stop a behavior are not teaching the children to respect authority, nor are they helping the child to become a responsible adult.”( Jacqueline Gonz) I believe that in today’s society parents are not doing their job. You’re supposed to guide your child to become a useful member to society, and to be an honest, hard worker. Things like…
for the better or for the worse? Some may argue that anyone who uses technology daily is addicted just like someone who is addicted to the nicotine in cigarettes. Others may argue that you cannot get a high from the internet or from technology like you do from a cigarette so therefore you cannot be addicted to technology. Whether or not a person is or is not addicted to technology the amount of technology we use daily, hourly, or even every minute could be creating a society that is better or worse…
